Rumblings of a Tesla battery plant coming to Kuna made their way through the community recently, causing mixed reactions from residents online.

There’s no evidence Tesla is building in the fast-growing city, but unrelated events might have touched off the online conversation.

According to Kuna Economic Development Director Morgan Treasure, on Jan. 18 Kuna BESS LLC, a subsidiary of Aypa Power, filed a design review modification for its Kuna Battery Energy Storage System project.

Treasure said while she doesn’t know for sure where the rumor started, she believes this project may be the source of confusion.

The modification to the BESS facility design was a change in the type of batteries to be used at the storage site. The new batteries are made by Tesla Inc., which also makes a line of popular electric vehicles.

“I’m thinking that’s where it went sideways,” Treasure said. “I basically spent all day yesterday afternoon, answering questions and phone calls about the Tesla plant that was coming to Kuna. And I was like, ‘what?’”

According to the Kuna BESS facility’s application, the storage facility is mapped out on 405,108 square feet of property. In comparison, the Tesla plant — or Gigafactory — in Nevada takes up 5.4 million square feet and the one in Texas is approximately 109 million square feet.

Idaho Power Communications Specialist Sven Berg said Idaho Power has a 20-year agreement with Kuna BESS LLC. The utility will pay the company to store Idaho Power-generated batteries at the facility. The utility company will then use the stored power as needed.  The agreement is part of an ongoing Idaho Power effort to utilize battery storage facilities so it can maintain reliable service during periods of high power use.

Filings with Ada County show Tesla has not purchased any land in Ada County recently. There is one deed transfer filed in 2023 by a Nampa-based company called Tesla Electric, which possibly contributed to the confusion, but the company is unrelated to the car-making company owned by Elon Musk.

BoiseDev could not reach out to Tesla for comment on whether they have plans to bring a manufacturing facility to the Treasure Valley because the company disbanded its public relations department in 2020. But the company is set to open a new dealership in Meridian later this year.
