Recall Alert: Toyota Tacoma – Kelley Blue Book

2023 Toyota Tacoma

Toyota will recall about 381,000 Tacoma pickups from model years 2022 and 2023 because of a possible problem with their rear axles.

In a press release, Toyota says, “Welding debris left on the ends of the rear axle assembly during manufacturing could cause certain retaining nuts to loosen over time and eventually fall off.” That could cause “a part to separate from the axle.” That could compromise vehicle stability and cause an accident.

The recall isn’t yet listed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) – the federal agency that oversees car safety. Toyota is the only automaker that routinely announces recalls before regulators do. So, we don’t have access to the government reports that typically tell us whether a defect has contributed to any accidents.

The company says dealers will “inspect the rear axle assembly and retighten the axle retaining nuts at no cost to customers.” They’ll replace axle components if necessary.

There is never a fee for recall-related repairs.
