Buick Reveals New Electra Concepts We Would Love To See In America

Key Takeaways

  • Buick unveiled sedan and wagon concepts influenced by PURE Design language.
  • Models, Electra-L and Electra LT, offer compelling looks and luxurious interiors.
  • Vehicles have elegant, striking design with advanced technology and impressive power output.

Buick unveiled sedan and wagon concepts at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show this week, dubbed the Electra-L and Electra-LT, and we very much hope they will make it to production. Both have been influenced heavily by the brand’s new PURE Design language, which has evolved heavily from the Wildcat concept unveiled a couple of years ago. While we’ve seen this styling debut on vehicles like the Envista and the newly redesigned Enclave, it just doesn’t have the same impact that it does on low-slung models such as these.

The Electra-L demonstrates all the characteristics of a luxury sedan, while the Electra-LT wagon moves in a more active direction, similar to the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo. Both offer compelling looks inside and out, and are just the shot in the arm Buick needs to get back on American consumers’ luxury radar.

Elegant And Striking

The vehicles are designed around the concept of energy flow, with athletic proportions in executive class sizes. The Electra-L sits 198 inches in length with a 118-inch wheelbase, pitting it squarely against competitors like the Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5 Series, and its corporate cousin Cadillac CT5, and we expect the Electra-LT to come in at the same length.

Buick Tells Us How Design Makes The Difference

Buick is reinventing itself and looking to the future with a new design language, and the choices it’s making are carefully considered.

These applications are the truest to the Wildcat concept yet, with the front featuring an upper fascia that protrudes almost to a point, and a lower fascia that convenes in the center upwards towards the redesigned Buick logo. The thin lights kink downward towards the ends and make way for dazzling lighting elements that cascade towards the lower fascia.

Down the sides, the Electra-L features this hooked element the brand calls the “wingstream” that moves from the front fender onto the doors, right beneath the slit-like camera rearview mirrors. The vortex wheels continue to be a great touch that we would love to see on a passenger vehicle. Moving to the rear you get a single taillight that stretches the length across, which has become a luxury performance hallmark.

The Electra-LT continues many of the same design elements but adds a slightly sloping fastback roofline that makes us miss the days of the Regal TourX. This model looks to have a slight lift, and features unique snowflake titanium wheels with ultra-low wind resistance. Of course, you can’t have an adventurous wagon without the obligatory aerodynamic roof box, that only appears to have enough room for a couple of skis and perhaps a few extra shirts.

Purple Minimalism And Advanced Technology

Besides the Electra-L’s lovely light purple exterior shade, both models feature an interior bathed in purple, gray, and gold that feels equal parts luxurious and relaxing. As this is a concept, it features restrained minimalism with some advanced tricks, like a pop-out screen for the passenger to use at their discretion, a fragrance atomizer, and even a suspended tea table.

Buick Teases First Ultium-Based Electric SUV

We’ll get to see an official reveal before the end of the year and a market launch in China in 2023.

Other features include a smart panoramic sunroof that can darken depending on the outside conditions, a wraparound HUD that displays all the necessary trip details, and AI assistant integration. The seats appear well bolstered and comfortable, with integrated leg rests, and the entire cabin is bathed in a soft purple light courtesy of a wraparound lighting strip.

The vehicles are built on the Autoneng smart electric platform, a derivative of the Ultium platform. Power in the Electra-L is sent to a rear axle motor that produces 341 horsepower and has a CLTC range of 435 miles. The Electra-LT features independent four-wheel drive producing more power but with less range as a result.
