Unlocking a steering wheel can sometimes mean inserting your car keys into the ignition and jiggling the steering wheel as you try to turn the key. However, you don’t want to break the key. But what if your car has a push to start button instead? Here’s what to do if your steering wheel becomes locked.
Steps to Unlocking a Steering Wheel
Sometimes you might unintentionally lock your steering wheel. Other times you might intentionally lock it. For example, if you park on a hill, you may need to lock the steering wheel to help keep the car from unintentionally rolling downhill, even if the car brake is on. So, how do you unlock it? These are the steps.
Push-Button Start Vehicles
- Push the start button with the brake pressed or not pressed.
- Typically a vehicle when turned on from the push-button start will unlock the steering wheel itself. However, you may need to turn the steering wheel to unlock it from its locked position.
Vehicles With Ignition Keys
- Put the key in the ignition.
- While gently trying to rotate the steering wheel, simultaneously turn the key in the ignition.
- When you hear a click, the steering wheel unlocks.
PRO TIP: For Subaru Outback owners, if you use the push-button start to turn on the vehicle then immediately put the vehicle into gear, everything can sometimes lock up, including the steering wheel. When this happens, give it a few minutes and try again. However, wait before putting the vehicle into gear. Another possible item to troubleshoot is it could be a car battery issue. Get your car battery tested at your local auto repair shop to know for sure. If it’s not the car battery, check if your car key fob is near the ignition switch. Sometimes interference can interrupt the RFID signal or your key fob needs a new battery.
