1990 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

Vintage 4x4s are cool. This classic 1990 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is next level, combining its timeless design with stout, modern bits. The Grand has a modern V8 engine, Dana 60 rear axle, Dana 44 front axle, a coilover suspension, Roadster Shop RS4 chassis, and more.

There are a number of pleasant surprises lurking under the Grand Wagoneer.

Beefy Roadster Shop RS4 Chassis

The foundation of the SUV is a Roadster Shop RS4 chassis. This particular version fits 1962-1991 Jeep Wagoneers. It features 5×2.5-inch, 0.188-inch-wall framerails and it offers 3.5 additional inches of width inside the chassis. Roadster Shop says this additional width allows for easy header installation. Mounting provisions are available for popular classic and modern engine and transmission combinations. Furthermore, all original mounting locations are engineered into the RS4 chassis. These include body, bumper, and core support mounts. The mounts allow easy bolt-on installation and eliminate cuts to the vehicle’s body. Additionally, it’s also worth noting that the ride height has been optimized so a body lift isn’t necessary. Finally, there’s a structural center crossmember with drop-out transmission and transfer case mounts.

Up front is a Dana 44 axle. Bringing up the rear is a Dana 60. The Grand’s suspension is a four-link setup with coilovers.

Currie Axles, Warn Hubs, Baer Brakes, And More

The RS4 chassis is fit with a Currie high-pinion Dana 44 front axle and high-pinion Dana 60 rear axle. The Dana 44 sports Warn Premium manual locking hubs. To rein in forward velocity, each axle is fit with Baer six-piston brake calipers and drilled and slotted rotors. An AGR power steering system makes easy work of aiming the 265/70R17 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires. The tires are mounted on 8-inch-wide Gloss Titanium Method Race Wheels.

Four-Link Suspension With Coilovers

The suspension consists of a four-link setup with coilovers. Roadster Shop designed the suspension to optimize anti-dive, anti-squat, and suspension articulation. Each Roadster Shop Fast Link 1.75-inch-diameter link is fitted with X-axis sealed bearing assemblies. Fox 2.0 coilovers with remote-reservoir shocks are used at each corner, and they’ve been valved specifically for the Wagoneer. Roadster Shop says the RS4 suspension offers 8 inches of front travel and 10 inches of rear travel. The package also includes splined front and rear sway bars and a performance steering box with equal length, parallel steering.

Under the Grand’s hood is a 6.0-liter V8 and its mated to a 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission.

6.0-Liter Powerplant

Under the hood of the Grand Wagoneer is a 6.0-liter L96 Vortec V8 engine. It draws fuel from a stainless steel 22-gallon fuel tank. The 364ci engine routes power through a 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission. A two-speed transfer case splits power to the axles.

The interior of the Grand Wagoneer has been upgraded with quality materials. It also has some of the latest audio tech.

Interior Amenities

The Grand Wagoneer’s cabin underwent a comprehensive renovation. It involved replacement of the headliner, carpets, door cards, and sail panels. This followed the application of sound-deadening material to the bare surfaces. Interior upgrades include reupholstered power-adjustable front seats and rear bench seat. Additionally, a Vintage Air climate control system helps keep passengers comfortable. There’s also an Alpine Bluetooth head unit connected to Focal speakers. Furthermore, there are Jeep Heritage billet aluminum cargo runners, woodgrain trim accents, and power-operated windows and locks. The steering wheel, wrapped in leather, mounts to a tilting column. Dakota Digital instrumentation keeps the driver up to date on the vehicle’s status.

There’s something about the faux woodgrain that just works on this Grand Wagoneer.

Glorious Faux Woodgrain

The Grand Wagoneer’s body boasts a dark blue finish, highlighted by faux-woodgrain trim. Other exterior features include Holley RetroBright headlights and replacement weather stripping and exterior lighting bezels. Additionally, the power-operated rear window mechanism underwent rebuilding. Noteworthy additions include a roof rack, a receiver hitch, fog lights, and a re-chromed front grille.

BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2s are wrapped around Method Race Wheels.

Record-Setting Sale Price

As you can imagine, a vintage 4×4 with this high level of restoration and upgrades doesn’t come cheap. In fact, the price tag for this build was over $200,000. Consequently, the Grand Wagoneer, presented by the concours-winning restoration specialists at Griot’s Motors, recently sold for a record-setting $170,000 on Bring a Trailer. For comparison, the next closest example of an SJ Wagoneer sold for $115,000 in August 2022.

Price notwithstanding, this Wagoneer is most definitely droolworthy.
